One of modern times most successful advertising campaigns saw the silhouette return to fashion at the start of the 21st century.
It was the energetic Apple iPod silhouettes on rich colored backgrounds which helped market the company's digital music player.
The First Silhouettes
The first silhouettes, called shades, were painted images of a subject's shadow. They were popular amongst English royalty and the art form quickly spread to Europe.
It was here, in France, that Etienne de Silhouette, so impressed his peers that his name became synonymous with the technique.
The popularity of Silhouettes hit new heights in the United States where they were seen in magazines, brochures and other printed material. Photographs took over in the mid 1900s.
